The 182,000 sq ft facility is replacing the current Nanaimo Correctional Centre which was originally built in 1953. It will have approximately 200 cells and will include modern spaces for educational and vocational programs and certified trades training, along with rehab spaces and culturally responsive Indigenous programs.
